P.E. Curriculum

Fullerton P.E. Curriculum
Grossmont P.E. Curriculum

The Fullerton curriculum was state approved January 4, 2017. Is it a chicken or the egg first conversation on your campus? Do some think it need be in your P.E. Department to offer the sport but need to add the sport to get it going for your P.E. curriculum? It's been done before for other sports, though, whichever way it works on your campus. It's been done.

Other 3C2A

CC Interest & Status List

The above links to a self-edit document. Please add your school and/or update your entries as you can.

Some other women's sports out there to consider are badminton, crew, flag football, rugby and wrestling. We think the number of players playing in high school, the number of players on the field for each team being twelve (12) women and the cost effectiveness of the sport lead to lacrosse.

Path To Competition

WWLL If Now

Ready? Join Fullerton (ICA) and SBCC (Club) in the Western Women's Lacrosse League for an immediate path to competition.

Athletic Department or Student Life? On most campuses student life is set up well for activity clubs but not for teams. We recommend you house your women's lacrosse team in your Athletic Department, as Fullerton has, for Title IX purposes.

Other Precedents

The Orange Coast College athletic department has sponsored an Intercollegiate Women's Crew program since 2013. Crew is not a 3C2A sponsored sport but that's not stopping Coast. The Department of Education & Office Of Civil Rights don't require sports be part of the 3C2A to count them when a college expands their sport programming to grow opportunities for women. You could also consider adding Crew. If that's your path please contact Orange Coast College.

Emerging Sport

Wait for emerging sport status or pioneer and lead the pack? There are different philosophies but being first was not the cart before the horse for Fullerton. Indeed, they were first to make it intercollegiate and it's worked for them since 2018-19.

More Title IX Detail

PictureFullerton In The Huddle Together After A Game
Let's be real. Unless you grew up playing the game you're not looking at women's lacrosse because you have a passion for this particular sport. It's the roster count, proximity of high school programs and cost effectiveness that has you looking. So, do you think you have to wait for the 3C2A?  You don't as long as you take it on in the Athletic Department and support it. The source for the interpretation that Title IX is not level specific, is the Association of Title IX Administrators, Title IX Compliance & Athletics document, page 12 which states, "Title IX does not require an institution to compete at a specific level."

Here's an excerpt from a DOE investigation summary provided by the Title IX Coordinator at a 3C2A school. This correspondence came after she met with the Regional Director, Attorney, Office of Civil Rights, San Francisco and discussed available competition criteria.

As for women's lacrosse there is sufficient interest and ability. The issue is available competition in the area where the institution's teams normally compete. For Title IX purposes, there is sufficient competition in the geographic area as club teams at four year institutions are included."
As a college administrative team you might choose to wait for a big announcement from the 3C2A but with the known precedents set by Fullerton and Orange Coast you don't have to wait. The trajectory is 3C2A but you can start now and go ahead.
The best way to support this effort is to take affirmative steps forward, steps that are consistent with the thirteen components used when a complaint is filed, to judge equivalent treatment of student athletes. By implementing some of these components the institution is supporting the trajectory of the sport as it proceeds on a path of becoming a CCCAA recognized sport. The components include such things as scheduling, coaching, uniforms, facilities, equipment & supplies, travel & per diem, and publicity to name a few."
